Ferret Health Warning: Distemper

On 2/8/08 a 3 month-old ferret that originated from Petco, Southridge presented at a reliable vet with classic sings of distemper. The ferret was euthanized.

In late January, a similar case was reported in a ferret originating from a small pet store on Hwy 100 in Hales Corners. It subsequently died.

Also in January, 2 additional cases were reported regarding ferrets originating form a Petland in the west Chicago suburbs.

It is unclear where these ferrets may have contracted distemper, however if you’ve come into contact with any pet store ferrets you could be running the risk of bringing distemper home to your current ferrets. Please direct any questions to your veterinarian.
